Guess the Exhaust

August 27, 2021

.

Did you guess?

.

Impressive if you did, many a petrol head wouldn't know the car let alone its exhaust system. But it is in fact built for the delightfully quirky and now rare 1955-64 Messerschmitt KR200.

.

.

Looking more like a Hipsters Watering can the system is basic, compact and functional just like the principle of the KR200.

.

Manufactured after the second World war by the German Aeroplane manufacturer Messerschmitt and said to be built from surplus cockpits the KR200 was one of the more unusual 'micro bubble cars' of the post war era which were cheap to build and even cheaper to run. Surprisingly popular in the UK with its three wheels instead of four which also made it eligible to be driven on a motorcycle licence, having the added appeal of a drier slightly more comfortable option than a motorbike.

.

.

After strong sales in the fifties in Germany and the UK sales began to slump as the European economy began to bounce back from the War. Fatally foreign bubble cars like this Messerschmitt actually drew so much of a reaction from Lord Leonard at BMC he charged Sir Alec Issigonis with the urgent task of ‘driving these bubble cars off the roads’ and thus spawned the creation of the Austin/Morris Mini which sealed the KR200s fate with its own popularity.

.

.

Today an extremely rare sight on the roads but on those occasions they charm and draw as much attention as any Super Car the World has to offer.
